Spirit of Adventure

16th – 25th September 2015
ACMI, Federation Square
Mediatheque after dark

As part of the Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia.

“What time then for fantasy, dreamers and poets?”
– The Outrageous Baron Munchausen

In answer to this question, CaSFFA heeds the call to adventure with a multifaceted exhibition celebrating both the 2015 festival theme Projection and the wondrous animation, visionary special effects and otherworldly themes of legendary Czech animator Karel Zeman, with film and object-based works that favour imagination over the rational and the suspension of disbelief over reality. For the duration of the festival visitors are invited to carve a trail through possible worlds populated by enchanted landscapes, fantastical visions and altogether unbelievable things.

Look for artworks by local film, theatre and visual artists during opening hours in the ACMI Café and Bar and balcony spaces, and after dark visit the Mediatheque which is transformed nightly into a Zeman-esque wunderkammer inhabited by evocative objects and imagery, dioramas, props, lo-fi projections and viewing devices. A selection of booths has been modified to create a series of distinct atmospheres in which to be immersed and enjoy our especially curated short film and animation program on the touch-screens alongside Zeman-related content and short films by Czech and Slovak filmmakers. Here you can project yourself into worlds within worlds to a place where there is time for subconscious meandering through fantastical dreams and rich visual poetry.
